Joseph is the "cousin" of Catherine the chamber-maid (in fact, people suspect he's her illegitimate son). He lives at the covenant and helps with general chores. He also works as a messenger-boy.
Joseph was born around 1185, so he is a couple of years older than Rhys. The two boys are playmates and have a good-natured rivalry.
