Deceased since Winter 1196: see Twisted Web.
Jonas of Wells was a member of House Jerbiton, who was killed by Caballus in the winter of 1196. He was posthumously Marched for diabolism.
Life
Jonas lived as an eremite in the city of Wells, where he practiced alchemy. He eked out a meager living selling charged items and minor spells to wealthy citizens.
Diabolism
In the story, Twisted Web, Caballus found Jonas was found lurking near the site where Caballus had killed a demon. When Caballus announced himself as a member of the Order of Hermes, Jonas attacked him. After defeating the diabolist, Caballus brought this information to the nearest Quaesitor, who immediately put together a trial. Jonas was found posthumously guilty, and posthumously marched. Caballus was given the rights to his belongings. Caballus and Sandre found Jonas' sanctum in Wells, and took a substantial amount of Vis from it, and a chest containing Infernally Tainted clothing. The Bishop of Wells has since had people seeking out Jonas' acquaintances, under suspicion on consorting with demons.
An inspection of Jonas's body revealed a small spider tattoo on the inside of his left forearm.
Grimoire
The Quaesitor Iudicium did not confiscate Jonas's writings, leaving them instead for Caballus to study. Presumably this is because the Quaesitor trusted Caballus to report any useful information in the books, and to safeguard them from magi who might be easily corrupted.
Jonas's grimoire contained the following spells; those marked with an asterisk were not already present in the Stranggore library:
- Subtle Taste of Poison and Purity* (InAq) L5
- Bind Wound (CrCo) L10
- Purification of the Festering Wounds (CrCo) L20
- Restoration of the Defiled Body (CrCo) L25
- Sight of the True Form (InCo) L15
- Whispers through the Black Gate (InCo(Me)) L15
- Revealed Flaws of Mortal Flesh (InCo) L10
- Lamp Without Flame (CrIg) L10
- The Call to Slumber* (ReMe) L10
- Piercing the Infernal Veil* (InVi) L20
- Circular Ward Against Demons* (ReVi) L20
The lab text for Piercing the Infernal Veil was marked with a note, "use this to check the six Hallows."
