Duran sent Miles and Aldeta to transport Eurydice from her pater's covenant, Bellaquin, to Casa sus Baux. The first leg of their journey was overland through the Pyrenees north to the port of Perpignan.

Along the mountain road, Eurydice's dog took an interest in a cave a bowshot off the road. Investigating, Miles found inside an old hermit dying of thirst, to frail to rise from his cot. They tended to the old man's immediate needs, and soon he recovered enough strength to speak. He asked them to go to the nearby village of Larsenne to carry a message to the reeve.
