As Godwyn, Thomas, and Eustace return from Bath, they spy a magical blizzard over Barstow. They arrive to find that Eustace's dad was lured into the storm by cries of help from his son. They follow the tracks of a dwarf to a grove in Mericas' Wood. There they catch the Dwarf Jester who tries to flee but is grabbed by Godwyn. He confesses and offers to make good. He invites them to drink which Godwyn does and is transformed into a tree. While he gloats and dances around, Godwyn uses his Heartbeast power to return to man form. He stops dancing and admits defeat. He tells of how the Abbot reneged on his deal not to rebuild on the Tor, and while the Lord of the Hunt was trapped, they built a church.
