Notable Skills
In addition to his fighting skills, Ugly Bill has useful experience from his mercenary days:
- Awareness
- Stealth
- Chirurgy
He could become a sought-after shield grog, if the magi can tolerate his temperament.
Background
Bloody Bill was once called "Ugly Bill" for the scars he received while manning a battering ram against a town gate. The defenders poured flaming pitch on him. He managed to stay on his feet and keep swinging the ram until the gate finally did crash open, but he doesn't remember much after that. The chirurgeons told him is wounds were mortal and he was left for dead, but somehow he survived. But he had been too wounded to partake in the sack of the town, so he had no loot to show for his pains. Penniless and disfigured, he drifted for a time.
A plum job fell into his lap through a cousin. His cousin had found steady work -- as a mercenary -- at a tower of wizards called Amici Brittanniae. It was garrison duty, with room and board, and best of all they paid wages in silver! Of course, you had to work for a bunch of wizards, the ill will engendered by the Gift means they not easy masters to accept. Ugly Bill proved up to the task, though. Really a wizard can't be much worse than your average mercenary captain.
Garvonn chose this worldly, battle-hardened warrior as a bodyguard for his filius Sandre Paen when the latter passed his Wizard's Gauntlet. Of course both magus and grog moved to Stranggore a few months later, but to Ugly Bill that's just like a transfer to another post. He didn't have any say in the matter -- but then, a lowly footsoldier never does.
Relationships
- Shield grog to Sandre
- Brother-in-arms to George the Bastard
- Brother-in-arms to John the Pedlar
Stories and Deeds
Bill earned the nickname "Bloody Bill," and became known as The Butcher of Blackbury, in Autumn 1194.
In Summer 1195, Bloody Bill almost died. He sustained a sword wound to to the torso and botched his Recovery Roll, so the wound festered and turned gangrenous. Merewen was able to brew a potion that cured the gangrene and saved Bill's life. He still spent the next two seasons bedridden next to Junior, who was also laid up due to wounds. From Junior's wild and rambling stories, Bill learned some things about the covenant's history.
