Trail of the White Wizard
Spring 1198
Sandre, Bloody Bill, and John the Pedlar followed rumors of a sinister albino wizard named Seleucus-- and found more than they bargained for.
Penned in Sandre's Handwriting, in Latin:
Two years ago I was brought notes from the hand of a failed apprentice of the covenant. The apprentice was obsessed with Vim, power, and his notes decried his frustrations that he felt at being taught too slowly. These notes hinted at a secret lab, which turned out to be in a small cave in the woods. I investigated along with those who originally found the notes, and we learned that the apprentice was thought to be dead. One of those with me, however, recalled just the year before having heard of a man matching the apprentices description. I kept an ear out for two years, speaking with those who provided information to my contacts, and it became known to me that the mysterious man traveled through Bath almost every spring.
In the last days of winter of 1997, I took my shield grog, Bloody Bill, and a covenant grog known for his skills in bargaining and knowledge of the minds of men, John the Peddler, to Bath to investigate. We left under the story that I wished to learn more about dealing with mundanes, bu the true purpose was to look for this man. It took some time find anyone who had seen him, but Bloody Bill got us our real start while spending time with the soldiers who guard the gates.
Bloody Bill learned there were 4 Wizards known in Bath. Jonas of Wells, who was killed by Caballus the previous year, Orvyn, a Soothsayer who was recently killed by bandits, and two wizards known as The White Wizard and The Red Wizard. The White Wizard matched the description of the man we looked for, and the word was he visited wealthy residents of Bath. They tried to avoid him if they knew he was coming, but if he knocked at their door and they were home, he was not refused entry. He seemed to be someone feared, but of great importance. We heard rumors that the wizard cast enchantments on those who he visited, but I was unable to confirm this with the magics I possess.
Unsure how to continue, Bloody Bill suggested we investigate the death of the soothsayer-murder seemed a suspicious death for one who claims to see the future. We traveled North from Bath to a small town, and a village boy led us to the Soothsayers hut. After the boy left, Bloody Bill entered the hut only to be set upon by a pair of skeletons immediately. Peddler John ran to assist him, but stuck his sword in the door frame which was most unhelpful. Bloody Bill blocked the doorway and fought ferociously despite a number of small wounds, and I picked the skeletons apart with my spells while he kept them at bay. I expended much of my energy destroying the skeletons, for an oppressive aura fought against me. Once the skeletons were destroyed we retreated from the hut to rest and tend Bill's wounds.
Bill and John gathered up the bones of the skeletons and brought them to me. I cast a spell to speak with the newly dead, not considering in my weary state that they must be too long dead for the spell to work. However, somehow the spell worked-perhaps the enchantment that animated their corpses tied their spirits to them as well? One was the body of a peddler who had little information to provide, but I agreed to see his remains returned to his home town for burial. The other corpse was that of Orvyn, who told me that he had been cpatured by The White Wizard and several men of arms, and sacrificed over a pentagram. Bill and John confirmed a pentagram within the hut, and much spilled blood. Orvyn's ghost told me The White Wizard lived further north in Lincolnshire. He also told me the Red Wizard was a friend of the White Wizard-and that his name was Virakon.
