Spring Cleaning
Spring Cleaning
Agnes the Apprentice, Eustace the Apprentice, John the Peddler, and Edgar the Good.
As told by Edgar the Good to another covenfolk.
Agnes told me not to tell anyone but I can tell just you.
As you know, George sent us down to clean out the basement to look for stuff to sell. We go down the armory stairs and behind the first door we find a long abandoned Sanctum. I wasn't about to go in but before I knew it Agnes used her magic to open the door. Eustace ran right in and started snooping around. I stayed back to guard the apprentice but when I heard the cackled cry of some creature calling for its master, I stepped in to make sure the boy was alright. Hand still grasping a bronze door knocker, his mouth was open like a boy caught in the pantry with his mouth full. I told him its not nice to barge in unannounced so with a smile he knocked again and asked to come in. Again the knocker screeched out for its master. John the peddler lost his patience with the boy and pushed the door open. By this time Agnes had snuck up from behind and was spying inside. She pointed to a chest and I went to go fetch it for her. I almost fell on my face when two hands rose up from the floor and grabbed my ankles. I didn't panic, well I panicked a little, when despite my best efforts I remained stuck. The boy thought quick and grabbed a hammer and after a few well placed blows he broken the grip of the stone hand. We stayed clear of that stone after that. Once inside they all cautiously poked around. Agnes went straight to what looked like a small glowing stool with two seats and clutched it in both hands. She and Eustace examined the thing and after a few minutes she declared that we should leave this all alone. Empty handed we left and Eustace made a mark on his slate.
The next room looked like Brian's horde only bigger and dirtier. A room as big as the great hall stretched out and was filled from wall to wall with junk. First thing we found, and this is what Agnes didn't want getting around, was a giant tapestry celebrated Argus' birthday. It was obviously a big party and I think Agnes was a little jealous cause she kept talking about Argus in hushed tones with Eustace after that. Got me thinking I wonder how old he is? Well I'm not asking him and perhaps that was what Agnes didn't want getting out that Argus' birthday is coming up and he's touchy about his age or something. Well we were digging through the mess filled with old rats and new bats, when a ghost started knocking things over. Most sensible people don't go where ghosts lead them but wizards think different so she followed this ghost to the outer foundation. Eustace started pulling lose stones out of the wall and soon we exposed a small nook with a blanket, a candle, and a book. Agnes was very excited and we sat for some time while she read. She talked to Eustace then asked John about Godwyn's chase. She called lunch a bit early and said we should go for a walk afterwards to clear our heads. A very sensible thing to do.
Walking staff in hand, John lead us a long way off, more of a march then a walk, and the girl seemed eager to get somewhere - not how one normally takes a walk. We crossed a bridge and headed right for Godwyn's chase. I hear that something happened to those woods since that wizard claimed them. They got all spooky and for some reason the girl wanted to go there. Perhaps she wanted to run into Godwyn without Merewen, as I did see her eyeing him at the winter feast. Anyway, their feet didn't move so I walked in and they all followed. John took the lead again and lead us right to an old hermit hole. Despite being the biggest I hopped down and started groping around in the dark. As my eyes adjusted I saw short tables with wizards stuff on them. I handed up two small books and something made of glass. They called me up and decided to get a cart to haul it all back. Once the girl was done looking at the old books we marched back to the covenant grabbed a cart and crates, returned to the hole, and then brought it all back again. George was quite mad at us by the time we got back but was quite pleased when saw a cart full of good stuff.
That night I saw Agnes sneak off to Junior's. I bet she went to ask how old Argus is. Perhaps she wants to throw him a party so best keep your mouth shut or you'll ruin her surprise, though if he's touchy about his age it may not be a good idea.
