Paul is a disfigured, hunchbacked boy who was found in the woods near Stranggore by Godwyn. He has few survival skills, but can shape shift into a bear and can read and write in at least English and Latin.
Paul is associated with someone he calls "Father Ryan" who raised him.

Paul spends the Winter of 1196 living with Godwyn and Thomas. Godwyn spends most of his time at Stranggore, so Paul spends most of his time following Thomas around, mimicking his actions through the Winter.
