Paul is a disfigured, hunchbacked boy who was found in the woods near Stranggore by Godwyn. He has few survival skills, but can shape shift into a bear and can read and write in at least English and Latin.

Paul grew up in a small town called Starfield, which lies west of Exeter. Paul was raised by Father Ryan, a priest who runs the small Starfield church.

Finding Ozerk
I went with Godwyn and a large man named Hywel, and a small girl and a bunch of armed men to a hill, went through some rocks and a bunch of buildings appeared. There were talking snakes, thorn bushes that attacked us, and some enchantment that caused our weapons to attack us. Eventually we found some old man, named Ozerk, who I guess is one of their friends. He was old, and not of sound mind. He had a cat, but an evil faerie lady apparently made it into a hat.

The Pilgrimage
"Godwyn invited me to go on a pilgrimage with himself, Thomas, and some awful man Godwyn is friends with. We traveled quite some distance before the piggish man finally decreed the pilgrimage had started. The behavior of the awful man, and Thomas too, was reprehensible. God saw to correct these men in their behavior, and me for my own sins I had not confessed. Godwyn was overcome, at the sight of a white deer, by the urge to let loose his inner beast. We were lead to the bones of a Brother of the Church, and his ghost tasked us to bring his bones to Canturbury...as the animals we embodied. We completed the task, not without trial, and my companions were quite humbled."

Frightened Villagers
"When I left Starfield, I traveled for many days. I was welcome nowhere, so I made a little campsite near a town called Barstow. I would change into a bear, which frightened the villagers away, and I would steal an occasional sheep when I needed food. One day I thought I heard someone near so I changed into a bear to scare them away. I only saw a wolf, though, and thought it left so I changed back. It turns out that the wolf was a wizard named Godwyn, and he had just hidden. When he saw me change my shape, he came out of the woods with his servant Thomas, a quiet and stealthy man, and we talked for some time. He took me to his home, and has watched out for me the way Father Ryan sued to. His servant has been teaching me to better care for myself."
