What he does? (Who he is)

He uses magic and force of arms to protect the magical from the mundane and the mundane from the magical.

Why he does it? (Motive, Personality)

'Magi Oblige'. He feels his role as Noble and Wizard obliges him to protect mundanes from the magical world and conversely to protect the magical world from the mundane. He believes these worlds should be separate and distinct.

What made him do it? (Past)

A noble of the Black Stewart Clan, James was taught to be proud of his position of authority and to be mindful of his duty to protect his vassals and serve his lord. While studying in Oxford, he was noticed by Constance of House Jerbiton and taken as an Apprentice. Cruelly, the act of opening his Arts turned his Gentle Gift vulgar and his Pater in trying suppress it weakened his Gift making it less effective on things he can not touch. This broken apprentice interfered with Constance's mundane affairs so he exchanged James for a rook of vis to Duncan the Bold ex Flambeau. Duncan brought his broken apprentice back to Scotland to Manar House where James was taught to fight both physically and magically.

James suffered after being opened to the Arts and found the adjustment from a life of privilege to one of a social pariah difficult. From this experience he learned that "Mundanes hate Wizard," and that only those touched by magic or those who serve them should be exposed to magic.

During his apprenticeship, Duncan forbade James from leaving the Covenant unaccompanied because he had many enemies within the Tribunal of 'Damned Hedgies'. From this experience he learned that the Order can only provide protection to those who can live to tell about it. One still needs to be on guard against ignoble wizard who manipulate or ignore the Code.

Duncan allowed James to compete in mundane tournaments where he discreetly used magic to win, or at least not lose. From this experience he learned that without his magic he is relatively weak. His magic is what makes him powerful.

Magical places and animals are either Covenant or Tribunal properties. Raiders will be punished accordingly.

Quaesitores - more politicians then police. Its up to the individual to uphold the spirit of the Code.
