Synopsis

Merewen needed some supplies for her laboratory and sent Agnes to the great fair at Saint Giles at Winchester to purchase them. Accompanied by her friend Eustace and John the Pedlar, she set out on her first big journey outside the covenant -- without her mistress!

One day out from the covenant, she encountered some goblins in the forest who asked for her help recapturing a toadstool ring they had lost in a battle with rival faeries. The goblins claimed the rival faeries had cheated because they had the help of an "evil" wizard, skilled with wards and binding.

Agnes decided not to get involved. Instead she went back to Stranggore to get help: Caballus and Sandre. They confronted the hedge wizard and found a rather disheveled-looking young man with unkempt hair, wearing his shirt backward. The hedge wizard summoned some of his faerie allies, invisible sprites. Sandre and Caballus were able to diffuse the confrontation and offered this wizard a chance to join the Order of Hermes. The hedge wizard, Mericas, accepted and swore the Oath of Hermes to Sandre with Caballus as his witness.
