Angus is a shield grog who knew James while that wizard was an apprentice at Manar House. Angus is not especially loud or impressive, but he is brave, hardy, and can drink many a larger man under the table. He typically fights with a short sword and shield but he is also skilled with bow and spear.

Background

Angus is a lowland Scot from Aberdeenshire. He was born and raised at the covenant of Manar House, where he was hand-picked to be a fighting grog. His fighting skills are mostly self-taught, for he is so headstrong that the covenant's sergeant-at-arms all but gave up on him. Perhaps because he was a few years younger than James when James was an apprentice, Angus was assigned as James' sparring partner and weapons trainer. Maybe the older grogs were simply trying to get Angus out of their way, or maybe they were hoping the older apprentice would beat some sense into Angus and he'd start paying attention to their lessons. The match proved an apt one, and for the last five years of James' apprenticeship, he preferred no other weapons tutor. Angus and James spent many an afternoon whacking one another with practice swords.

Personality

Angus is brave (+2). He proved himself by stand toe-to-toe with an ogre on James' Gauntlet. He also had a hearty interest in the girl Isabel, though whether he was drawn to her beauty in particular, or whether his eye tends to wander, remains to be seen.

Reputation

Angus earned the sobriquet "the Dragon Slayer" in Autumn 1195 when he slew a fire drake in the story, Here Be Dragons. His Reputation is "Dragon Slayer" level 1, but it really refers to his dauntless élan: any time he fights a fearsome opponent, it will increase (not just with dragons).

Notable Abilities

Unlike most grogs, Angus can ride. He therefore makes a good shield grog for James, who is usually mounted.

Angus is a Poor Student, but he is also a Good Teacher. Since Summer 1198, he has been master-at-arms for the turb, in charge of training the grogs in martial skills..

Relationships

Angus was James's weapons tutor and the magus and grog are old friends.

Angus has a very pretty young wife, Isabel, whom he met while escorting James on his Wizard's Gauntlet. The couple have one daughter, Mary, born Summer 1196.

Seasonal Duties

Angus's seasonal duties are offset from the rest of the turb. When they are idle, in Winter and Summer, he is working: providing weapons training. Angus's free seasons are Spring and Autumn, and he has orders from George the Bastard to use them improving his own weapon skills.
